When a pill that gives its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes hits the streets of New Orleans, a teenage dealer and a local cop must team with an ex-soldier to take down the group responsible for its creation.
Before sitting down to watch this I have to admit that I fell in love with the trailer and thought that the movie had a brilliant concept. After watching Project Power, I was a little disappointed as it wasn’t as ‘pedal to the metal’ as I thought it was going to be. The filmmakers seemed to be holding something back. So, I suppose those feelings of disappointment can be dismissed if this movie was merely world building for any potential sequel, because let’s face it practically all of the movies like this want to build themselves up past the sequel into a franchise. I suppose another reason for this disappointment could be because how radically Marvel and DC movies have changed the superhero movie genre. I probably should have faced with the point of view that Project Power was a potential feature length pilot for a possible Netflix series as this seemed to have been on a similar scale to the other Marvel Netflix series. I also found that the drug and its relation to the granting of superpowers proved to be an interesting narrative device and the use of the drug led to some of the more cooler effects used in the movie.
I enjoyed Jamie Foxx’s performance and I have to admit that it has been a little while since I last saw Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a movie. I thought that on more than several occasions Dominique Fishback stole the show of note where the scenes were her character showcased her rap skills.
