The Liberator takes place during World War II where maverick U.S. Army officer Felix Sparks and the 157th Infantry Regiment fought for over five hundred days alongside the Allied forces during the Italian campaign.
Okay if you’re looking for something that you can watch in an afternoon on Netflix, I highly recommend this one. Now granted there might be some people who don’t watch an awful lot of animated movies in the past few years I can only think of one movie that has a similar animation style. Loving Vincent released in 2017 directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman. Sitting here writing my review I have to admit I was at least briefly reminded of The Dirty Dozen.
For those of you who are interested The Liberator is based on Alex Kershaw’s 2012 The Liberator: One World War II Soldier’s 500-Day Odyssey. I enjoyed Bradley James’ performance as Felix Sparks
The Liberator certainly is an interesting story that needed to be told and I suppose it would be very easy to compare it to something like the Band of Brothers mini-series from 2001 or perhaps even The Pacific mini-series from 2010.
My biggest complaint about the whole thing, and I know that with only four episodes for the entire season it really did not allow for much emotional investment in the characters beyond that of Felix Sparks and there is also part of me that wanted to know a little more about the men under his command because the entire series seemed barely touch the surface. Though perhaps I should just also read the book.
