Ginninderry welcomes its first major community park in Strathnairn. At 2.7 hectares the park features modern play equipment, designated picnic areas and high-quality amenities.
Minister for Housing and Suburban Development Yvette Berry said that this new park has a network of circulation paths, a boardwalk across the pond and wetland system that provides visitors with full, all abilities access to the facilities. The park features a large playground and plenty of play spaces as well as a multiuse sports court and fully enclosed cricket nets. Recreational areas are great places for communities to come together, get to know each other and just enjoy the outdoors. The Minister also said that in March this year, Ginninderry welcomed its first residents and with Strathnairn set to see 1,500 dwellings, this park will be an important facility for residents and families.
“The ACT has the highest participation rates in the country when it comes to sport and physical activity and the ACT Government wants to make sure there are plenty of opportunities and spaces for Canberrans to get out there and be active. It’s great to see Ginninderry come to life as it continues to grow quickly. The vision of Ginninderry has always been to build a community of international significance with innovation and sustainability at its core.” Minister Berry commented.
The Minister explained that Ginninderry is the region’s first ‘6 Star Green Star – Communities’ rated development and the community can come along and experience the unique and fully furnished 27sqm ‘tiny house’, and a zero-energy home. Ginninderry is also experimenting with irrigated versus non-irrigated turf which is on display including a grass driveway as well as other sustainability features including solar energy packages, double glazing, electric vehicle charging points and low energy lighting. The Minister also pointed out that Ginninderry sits alongside more than 590 hectares of conservation area along the Murrumbidgee River in West Belconnen which is protected by a new Conservation Corridor Trust established by the ACT Government. Minister Berry said that the corridor is an important natural asset crossing the ACT-NSW border and home to protected fauna and flora, including the Little Eagle, the Pink-tailed Worm-lizard and Yellow Box Red Gum Grassy Woodlands. This park is a great next milestone for the area, integrating the natural environment that will be enjoyed for many years to come.
Ginninderry is a Joint Venture between the ACT Government (60%) and the Riverview Developments Pty Ltd (40%) and will deliver approximately 11,500 dwellings over a 37-year period. Ginninderry stretches from the north western suburbs of Canberra (Holt and Macgregor) across the ACT/NSW border into a part of the Yass Valley. It is bounded on two sides by the Murrumbidgee River and Ginninderra Creek.
