A modern-day Ned Kelly robs banks in Australia and gives all the money to the poor people. Ned is forced to go to Hollywood in order to make enough money to save his family’s land.

Okay, I have been meaning to review Reckless Kelly for a while and I only just found this on eBay. The wonders of internet shopping, and for those of you who might be wondering yes, I will be (at some point) rounding out the Yahoo Serious trilogy with Mr. Accident because this came in a three pack.

Delightfully stupid I think is the best way to describe this one I found myself on the verge of tears from laugher several times. Sitting here writing this I cannot make up my mind if Reckless Kelly is dated or progressive with what it has to say about protecting the environment, gun violence, banks, Aboriginal Land Rights and the question of an Australian Republic. Good thing that this was a comedy, though it did seem that the movie had too much to say given its 80-minute runtime. It would have been good if the movie was a little more focused with its ‘social message’.
Compared to his performance in Young Einstein perhaps Serious’ performance as Ned Kelly was a little dry. There is still a lot to like about this movie. The Soundtrack. The performances of Hugo Weaving, John Pinette and Alexei Sayle. Then of course there is the beer, the wildlife and the silliness of the film’s climax. I cannot help but wonder how much the last stand at the Glenrowan Hotel and Video Rental was influenced by the Hot Shots movies.
