Rogue

Director MJ Bassett
Starring Megan Fox, Philip Winchester, Greg Kriek
Rated MA
Score 2/6

O’Hara is a mercenary leading a squad of soldiers on their mission to rescue hostages in remote part of Africa. Unfortunately, the mission goes wrong, and the team are stranded, forced to survive against the local rebels and a lioness.

Okay, I have to admit that I was a little excited to see that Megan Fox was cast in this considering the last time I saw her in a movie was probably the second of the new Ninja Turtles movies and I suppose we should insert the obligatory joke about the fact that Fox’s character Samantha O’Hara had perfect hair and makeup for the entire movie (though from another point of view this shows that her character is a cold hearted badass). I would also like to note that I haven’t heard of the director MJ Bassett before and apparently, she wrote the movie with her daughter.

Rogue’s main plot of a rescue mission gone wrong, worked. The addition of the rogue lion element to the story caused the movie to fall flat on its face. A saving grace of the movie was that even though Bassett’s message about big game hunting could be construed as being a little preachy I got the impression that she didn’t make an effort to beat the audience over the head and make the audiences feel guilty as she communicated her message.
There was some questionable effects used which I supposed could have been remedied if the movie had a bigger budget. There is part of me that must ask did Rogue really have to clock in at 105 minutes, I felt that Rogue needed to have a quicker pace. I was a little surprised to see Phillip Winchester pop up in this and Rogue has one of the more interesting uses of a song made famous by the Backstreet Boys.
