A Civil War veteran agrees to deliver a girl, taken by the Kiowa people years ago, to her aunt and uncle, against her will. They travel hundreds of miles and face grave dangers as they search for a place that either, can call home.
For those of you who are interested News of the World is based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Paulette Jiles. It should also be noted that this is the English language debut film for German actress Helena Zengel and this is Tom Hanks’ first full ‘western’ film.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the Western genre, I have always thought that they are fun movies to watch. It was good to see that News of the World was different from the stereotypical ‘gunslinger western’. I also liked how the movie looked at the idea of family. For a while I thought that I was going to have to wait for the DVD release of News of the World because I thought I missed it in the cinema, so I was glad that I stumbled across this on Netflix.
This is a beautifully shot movie, even though the countryside where the movie was shot looked a little bleak and baron there is just something amazing about the area. I know there are a lot of people out there who are talking about the death of movie cinemas, well I suppose in a lot of ways I am a dinosaur because I think that movie cinemas will never die. There are a couple of scenes that I would have loved to have seen on a cinema screen instead of my Television most notably the sandstorm scene. Both Hanks and Zengel gave great performances what made their performances even more compelling is that their characters were unable to communicate effectively with each other for the first half of the movie. I also enjoyed Thomas Francis Murphy’s performance as the egotistical Merritt Farley.
