A retired Special Forces officer is trapped in a never-ending time loop on the day of his death.
I do have memories of seeing trailers for this on Television last year, but I can’t be sure if I ever saw times for this for screenings at the friendly neighborhood cinema, so I suppose it was a combination of the pandemic and my own special brand of procrastination that has kept me from taking the time to watch this.
The easy way to explain this one would be to say that its Groundhog Day meets Grand Theft Auto Five (an odd thing to say maybe, but some of the action sequences look as if they could have been played in any session of GTAV) and yes I suppose even The Edge of Tomorrow (just look to Michelle Yeoh’s role). I loved how the time loop was framed within the movie’s universe, I felt that it was structured in such a way that cemented the movie’s video game feel and caused the ending to live up to the movie’s title.
After seeing his performances in The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year I’m starting to see that Frank Grillo is a good choice as a leading man for action movies. I loved Selina Lo’s performance as Guan Yin while for some reason Mel Gibson’s performance as Colonel Clive Ventor seemed to remind of his performance as Voz from Machete Kills.
