Life in St. Petersburg drastically changes when a mysterious vigilante dressed as a medieval plague doctor appears in the city. Declaring that the world is “plagued by injustice”, he begins to cure it by murdering people he considers villainous. For Police Major Igor Grom and his rookie partner, Dima Dubin, the only thing that matters is that the Plague Doctor is a coldblooded murderer who must be stopped by any means neccessary.
When I got the chance to watch this, I was not entirely sure if I was going to write a review for this. However, within the first eight or so minutes I found myself chuckling hysterically, so I knew I kind of had to write something about Major Grom: Plague Doctor.
For those of you who are interested Major Grom: Plague Doctor is based on the “Major Grom” comic book series published by Russian publisher Bubble Comics. This was released in Russia in April 2021 and received a Netflix release in May (just not in the Australian Netflix Library, as far as I can tell), even with its Netflix release there are several scenes that I would love to see at the cinema to be able to really appreciate their impact .
For those of you who might be suffering from Marvel-fatigue if you ever get the chance watch a comic book movie from another country, it will help you from burning out on the comic book genre.
It was really interesting to see how many plot elements from Plague Doctor reminded me of other comic book movies (I enjoyed the nods to Batman throughout the movie), the first time I laughed at the movie was what looked to be an homage to Lethal Weapon 2. In places Plague Doctor embraces some of the cliches that you have seen used in almost every single police movie that you have ever watched, it should also be noted there are even post credits scenes. Be sure to watch them.
I went into Major Grom: Plague Doctor completely unfamiliar with the director and all of the actors cast in the movie. I loved Sergei Goroshko’s performance as Sergei Razumovsky, I hope to see more of Goroshko’s work.
I have one thing that I have to ask, so when is the sequel being released?
