WA Raises $2 Mill for Charity from Drink Containers

Western Australians have raised more than $2 million for thousands of local community groups by donating refunds from drink containers through the State’s Containers for Change initiative, with more than 627 million containers returned State-wide since the launch.  Environment Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson made the announcement while visiting Return-It in Geraldton, which has received the most containers of any refund point outside of the Perth metropolitan area and the third highest amount overall in the State.
“Two million dollars in donations is a fantastic achievement for the people of Western Australia. We have done it 10 cents at a time, which just shows that every returned container counts. I’d like to thank the Geraldton community for embracing Containers for Change. Thanks to your generosity, 28 local charities and community groups have received much-needed funding.” Minister Sanderson commented “Containers for Change results in an increased recycling rate in Western Australia, diverting tonnes of recyclable material from landfill.”
The Minister said that Total donations in the Mid-West now exceed $116,000, with more than $68,500 going to community groups and more than $48,000 to local charities. These include schools, the School of the Air, sporting clubs and the local Rotary Club.
Minister Sanderson explained that Containers for Change was launched on October 1, 2020 and encourages Western Australians to return eligible drink containers for a 10-cent refund. More than 627 million containers have been returned State-wide since the launch. Donations can be made to any organisation fundraising through Containers for Change by using the groups scheme ID.
