A bank teller discovers that he’s actually an NPC inside a brutal, open world video game.

As fun and light-hearted movie Free Guy I was a little bummed that I didn’t get a chance to watch this one on the big screen. Now yes there are people who might say that cinemas are dying but as I figure it that won’t happen until wall sized screens are more affordable.
Even though the computer game world in Free Guy seems like some sort of homage to the Grand Theft Auto games the movie itself is a feel-good movie, I certainly wasn’t expecting that from it, the story between Millie and Walter (portrayed by Jodie Comer & Joe Keery) was what took it in that direction. Though truth be told though I was excited for the release of Free Guy, and it kind of slipped from my radar and fell into the ‘I’ll get to it when I get to it’ basket, though luckily it did find its way to the bottom of the basket. I was unaware that Shawn Levy had directed this, I’ve come across Levy’s work in the past but not enough to say that I would be familiar with his name. Levy ended up delivering something that asks a couple of interesting questions about life and there are a couple of moments towards the end of the final act that would have been best served on a cinema screen.
It is very easy to enjoy a Ryan Reynolds performance, but I really enjoyed Taika Waititi’s performance as Antwan. Taika’s performance left me wondering if the character was evil because he was genuinely a bad person or he just an idiot who didn’t know any better. It is also interesting to see that some of the attitudes of Antwan are like some of the computer games and movies that are being made. I also loved Lil Rel Howery’s performance as Buddy the security guard, if Guy was the hero of the movie, in my mind Buddy was the heart of the movie.
