A 19-year-old Greek Australian youth struggles with his sexual identity and has one clumsy heterosexual and several homosexual encounters.
I was not aware of the existence of this movie until recently, though when Head On was originally released I was aware of Alex Dimitriades’s work through his time on the Australian drama series Heartbreak High. For those of you who are interested Head On was based on the 1995 novel Loaded written by Christos Tsiolkas (another entry on the list of movies based on books where I haven’t read the book).
I know its an odd thing to notice but I was surprised that the font used in the opening credits reminded me of other Australian Film and Television shows from the 90’s like Police Rescue. It was also interesting to see that the digital transfer for streaming services seems to have some age to it. I was surprised to see that Head On was the kind of movie that didn’t waste any time to get going and was unflinching attitude towards drug use and sexuality. I enjoyed Alex Dimitriades’ performance as Ari, and he had a couple of monologue moments that kind of reminded me of the movie Trainspotting. I always do my best not to spoil anything when I can but there is a chilling moment in the last 20 minutes that made me fall in love with Paul Capsis’ performance as Tula.
