Three generations of women fight back against those who could take everything from them.
For those of you who haven’t it figured it out already I’m prone to spontaneous acts of procrastination and that’s probably why I have taken so long to write this review. From what I can gather it seems that Gunpowder Milkshake was largely ignored at the box office. Now of course things like Covid played a part in things but there is also the fact there is more then a few people who have dismissed it as a John Wick rip off, calling it Jane Wick and it just might be that. But here’s a secret its influenced by other movies as well such Drew Pearce’s 2018 movie Hotel Artemis, Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Volume 1 and perhaps even to a lesser extent John Woo’s 1997 movie Face/Off making it something more then just a John Wick rip off and I would like to point out the obvious and that being influenced by so many movies is only a bad thing when it is for malicious reasons by the filmmakers and when it is done because the filmmakers love the genre that they are working in it can’t help but expose the movie going public to movies that they might not have seen before. Even though this the only movie I have seen directed by Navot Paposhado after researching his filmography it seems genre blending should be expected from Paposhado. There was some interesting casting choices here as expected Paul Giamatti gave a good performance though I am almost certain that I have seen in him in a similar role at least once before. I enjoyed the performances of Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh, and Carla Gugino and I loved the library scene that was clearly a hat tip to John Wick 2’s gun sommelier scene. Considering that the first time I came Karen Gillan’s work in Doctor Who and I must admit that I don’t think that I have seen her in anything other then a science fiction role, so it was great to see her in a different genre. I also loved the dynamic her character had with the kid played by Chloe Coleman. But what really struck me about Gunpowder Mikshake was the creativity of some of the action sequences. The final fight scene in the library was brilliant.
