Lt. Cmdr. Tom Dodge is assigned as Captain to the USS Stingray, an old diesel driven submarine that has seen better days with a crew of Navy misfits.
From what I can tell it has been ten years since I last reviewed this and I have been meaning to watch this for the past few days, so it’s good to finally get around to watching it. Down Periscope may not be an all-time great, but it’s fun to watch and has a few moments that will stay with you long after the credits roll such as an act of flatulence that is on the top ten list of greatest cinematic farts and a memorable cover of Louie Louie (not the best interpretation of the song but definitely in my personal top ten covers of Louie Louie). Both Kelsey Grammar and Lauren Holly gave decent enough performances but the really great performances come from the minor characters such as Ken Hudson Campbell as Buckman, Harland Williams as Sonar (Williams has one of the funniest moments in the entire movie), Toby Huss as Nitro and Rip Torn as Admiral Winslow. I also loved Rob Schneider’s portrayal of Marty Pascal which is one of his best performances ever. Though there really wasn’t much to his performance (because his scenes got cut out) Harry Dean Stanton gave his character Howard a commanding onscreen presence.
