Canberra’s cyclists will soon have more space for training and racing, with construction kicking off on an extension to Stromlo Forrest Park’s criterium cycling track. “The extension through to Uriarra Road will give event cyclists unrestricted access to the criterium circuit, which is already a very popular training and racing facility,” Special Minister of State Chris Steel commented.
Minister Steel explained that the works will also increase the safety for cyclists entering Stromlo Forest Park who have otherwise had to compete with cars. New access arrangements will avoid the need to use Dave McInnes Road, which has also become busier since the opening of the Stromlo Leisure Centre and during events at Stromlo Forest Park.




“These works will extend the circuit by 500 metres and also provide an 80-metre link up to Stromlo Leisure Centre. This will mean triathlons can make the most of both facilities,” Minister Steel commented.
The Minister said that the new section of track is six metres wide, making it suitable for racing. Auscycling was consulted as part of its design, to ensure it meets competition standard. The Minister added that work to repair and upgrade the dirt carpark with an asphalt surface is also due to commence soon, as part of the ACT Government’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure improvements across Canberra.
“As Canberra continues to grow, it’s important we also keep growing our great professional and community sports facilities like Stromlo Forest Park to meet local and visitor needs,” Minister Steel commented.
Minister Steel said that with weather permitting, the track extension is due to be completed around September.
