In a zombie-infested Australian wasteland, soldier Rhys has dedicated his life to tracking and capturing survivors for the Surgeon General in hopes of finding a cure.
Perhaps I should have done a small amount of homework before finally sitting down to watch this and have rewatched Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, in retrospect it wasn’t something I should have done to stop myself from feeling lost while watching Apocalypse but I think I would have been more excited to see Jay Gallagher and Bianca Bradey return to their roles as Barry and Brooke. I’m glad that I finally got the chance to watch and hope that the wait isn’t as long if the Roache-Turner’s decide to finish off the trilogy. Judging by the way they finished the movie I hope that they get the opportunity. Unfortunately, Apocalypse wasn’t as good as Road of the Dead. When it was released back in 2014, from what I remember it was one the first Australian low-budget action/horror spatter-fests that I watched (I’m fairly certain the first movie I’ve watched that falls into this category was Stephen Amis’ 2012 movie The 25th Reich) so I suppose Apocalypse didn’t capture the ‘shiny, wild and new’ feelings like Road of the Dead did. Wyrmwood: Apocalypse is still a watchable movie with some brilliant shots of the Australian bush, the same sort of action that was in Road of the Dead and a small degree of world building and the interesting spin that was brought to zombies with this movie. Though it would have been great if Barry and Brooke were given a little more screen time. I loved Shantae Barnes-Cowan’s and Tasia Zalar’s performances as Maxi and Grace and hopefully I will come across more of their work in the future. Nick Boshier’s performance The Surgeon General there was a cartoon supervillain quality to his costume that I loved.
