MDFF 2022 – Cats of Malta

Malta CatsDirector Sarah Jayne
Score 5/6

Celebrating Malta’s stray cats and the people who – through volunteering, art and folklore – show the cats unconditional love and support.

A documentary about Cats, it would surprise me if this wasn’t one of the more popular documentaries that is going to be screened at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival. Granted this might be an odd thing to say but given how strange and scary the world has been for the past couple of years I think that we all need to spend a little time watching a documentary about Cats. Now right from the beginning I was struck by the colour and how much of a beautiful place Malta is and there are some stunning shots of the docks. There are some stunning shots of the Maltese cats proving that at least sometimes it is possible to work with animals (or at least I’m assuming that the cats where easy to work with). I thought that the point that artist Matthew Pandolfino made about the differences in how Male and Female cats look to be very interesting. There were also some interesting points made about the different personalities of the cats fed by some of the feeders. Malta’s youngest cat feeder, Isaac is somebody who should be admired for what he is doing at his age.
