Canberrans will soon have access to additional tennis facilities in the Gungahlin region, with the ACT Government to start the construction of the Gungahlin Tennis facility. ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry said that located in Amaroo, the facility is part of the ACT Government’s plan to support the growing Gungahlin region – delivering the infrastructure that makes Canberra one of the most liveable cities in the world. The construction of the projects will also create local jobs, supporting our efforts to grow the ACTs total employment base to 250,000 jobs by 2025. The Minister went on to explain that the new Gungahlin Tennis Facility will include 10 full sized courts, two hot shots courts, a hitting wall, LED lighting, parking, and a pavilion. Consultation on the design for the new facility is now open, with the public encouraged to view the designs for the new facility on the YourSay website until 19 August.
“COVID-19 disrupted many people’s abilities to get out and stay active. These new facilities and upgrades will help encourage more people to get out there and participate in the sports they love” Minister Berry commented “We went to ensure all children have the opportunity to play sport, which is so important for their physical and mental wellbeing.”
The Minister explained that over the next four years the ACT government will also begin scoping works for future upgrades to the Dickson and Manuka pools. This includes refurbishing the toddler pool at Manuka Pool for families to continue to enjoy in the summer months.
“We are investing in infrastructure that is built for Canberra, and this includes community sporting facilities to help keep people active and healthy.” Chief Minister Andrew Barr commented “With participation increasing, these new facilities and upgrades will ensure we keep pace with population growth and deliver facilities for the community to enjoy now and into the future.”
The Chief Minister explained that the ACT Government will provide $1.82 million over three years to support six local organisations, including the Physical Activity Foundation and Pegasus, to encourage more kids to get active and stay healthy.
