An Australian truck driver writes romance novels. His engaged, tomboyish, crop duster best friend’s name, Ruby Vale, is unasked used as author. Complications arise when his novel takes off. Will they remain friends or…?

Okay even though I don’t think that I have reviewed this for the movie boards before, this is something of a revisit considering I have vague memories of watching this back in 1999 or 2000 when this was originally released. Paperback hero is dated, now it’s not so dated that you’re looking into some sort of time warp its aged enough that while watching a digital copy of the movie looking at the footage you can tell that its old but I suppose considering that the movie was released 24 years ago in a few more it just might end up falling into the time warp category anyway. Now as charming a movie as Paperback Hero is to watch and Hugh Jackman and Claudia Karvan are great as Jack and Ruby.I loved the scene where Jack and Ruby sing karaoke. Bruce Venables was great as Artie opposite Jeanie Drynan. There were also some great shots of the Queensland outback. My biggest problem with the movie is that I felt that a little bit more thought needed to be into the A choice and B Choice when it came to Ruby’s potential suitors because the direction of the movie becomes pretty clear pretty quickly which makes this a movie you might not want to rewatch in a hurry.
