A United States chemist is captured by terrorists. But a rescue attempt by an elite group of Navy Seals goes wrong when they are captured. Now they must wage a silent war beneath the waves.
If memory serves I still have a VHS copy of Steel Sharks (yeah I still have VHS movies and I haven’t played them in years). I’m not really sure what inspired me to rewatch Steel Sharks, I suppose it was one of the spur of the moment decisions while looking for a movie to watch on Prime Video. I really haven’t come across any of the movies directed by Rodney McDonald apart from Steel Sharks. It should be noted that several scenes involving Navy helicopter, ship, and command footage in Steel Sharks were used in the production of Crash Dive, Freedom Strike, Counter Measures and Agent Red. Gary Busey, as weird as he is, was a good choice as an American Submarine as Commander Bill McKay and I enjoyed Billy Dee Williams’ performance as the Admiral who commands the fleet and the rescue mission.
Sitting here reviewing a movie that was originally released when I was 14 I would say that there are some aspects of the movie that didn’t age that well, most notably the underwater model shots of the submarines. Though what I did like was that even though this can easily be described as ‘die hard on a submarine’ the action is fairly solid in a Friday night beer night sort of way.
