To keep her ailing father from serving in the Imperial Army, a fearless young woman disguises herself as a man and battles northern invaders in China.
For the record at the time this was released, I think I was making plans to go see this at the cinema but didn’t get round to going. Also as I’m sure more than a few of you are aware that the 2020 adaptation wasn’t even close to being the live action adaptation of Mulan the first being 93 years ago with Hua Mulan Joins the Army in 1927. I’ll also try to not throw too many stones at Disney even if Disney might deserve it. I haven’t watched all of the live action adaptations, they just really haven’t appealed to me as something that needed to be watched. Does anybody out there like any of the live action adaptations?
I liked the opening act of the movie and the fact that I noticed slight nods to the original soundtrack.I also loved the comedy in the scene where Mulan visits the matchmaker and I liked some of the discussions between Mulan and her fellow recruits about being matched by the matchmaker. I enjoyed.Crystal Rao’s performance as young Mulan and Tzi Ma’s performance as Hua Zhou, Mulan’s father. I felt that towards the end of the first act things started to go bad for the movie towards the end of the first act. Mulan’s decision to take her father’s place didn’t seem to have the needed impact especially if you compare it to Disney’s animated version and went completely off of the rails when Mulan was revealed to be a woman and not a man, the chinese adaptations and the animated version did a better job. Where the filmmakers dropped the ball was that Jason Scott Lee’s performance as Böri Khan wasn’t as threatening as he needed to be.
