The Expendables – original and new – are on a mission, this time to Qadhafi’s old chemical weapons plant in Libya to intercept Suharato Rahmat, on his own solo operation to steal nuclear missile detonators for his wicked client, Ocelot.
My first thoughts about The Expendables 4 as the credits rolled was that I needed a shower to wash off the stink of this movie, which was disappointing considering that the majority of the cast are proven good choices within the action genre, and if the number 3 was the movie that put the franchise in the ground then number 4 was the 6 feet of dirt to keep it there. I was a little disappointed with Jason Statham’s performance; he’s usually capable of so much more while Megan Fox is yet to prove herself as anything more than the love interest in an action movie, the last time I saw her in the lead role for an action movie it was in the below average Rouge, I’d like to think that I might of been more lenient on Fox in Rouge if I had watched it after I watched Expend4bles. My biggest complaint about number 4 was the quality of the effects and how the action sequences (particularly the first one at the chemical plant) looked as if it was staged by the fight choreographer from Haim Saban’s Power Rangers from the early 90’s. I’m starting to appreciate things like 4K and UHD as I try to watch fewer movies on my laptop (it’s a habit I probably won’t outgrow) but as great as these higher resolutions are, they seemingly highlight instances where effects have clearly been rushed.
