Story of a frog, a bear and a pig (portraying themselves are Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, and Miss Piggy) on the road to Hollywood. Kermit claims it is “approximately” the way the Muppets began. While on their nationwide trek, they encounter Doc Hopper who plans to make Kermit his spokesman for his frog leg restaurant chain.
A Muppets movie, I don’t think that I’ve watched one for the movie boards. Like me I’m sure there’s more then a few people who get warm and fuzzy nostalgic feelings when they think about The Muppet Show. For those of you who might need a little bit of context the TV series set in the theatre first aired in September of 1976 while The Muppets Movie wasn’t released until 1979.
The overall plot of Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear travelling to Hollywood to get to an audition is simple yet satisfying in a ‘getting the band together’ sort of way. They really do anything to complicated with the plot as supposedly Jim Henson was more interested in using the movie as vehicle to push the technological limits and capabilities of puppetry.I loved the ‘4th wall break’ that was used to catch the band up through the use of the movie’s screenplay. Perhaps I need to watch old episodes of The Muppet Show a few more times because there’s heaps of cameo appearances throughout the movie my favourite being James Coburn, Big Bird and Orson Welles.
