Alright, the decision to watch Airplane! (Flying High) was based purely on the fact I had recently watched Wrongfully Accused and after watching Airplane! It made sense to watch Airplane 2: The Sequel. I suppose at some point I should watch the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour! because Airplane! borrows its plot, central characters, and also some dialogue.
Because of its legacy there are instances of jokes from Airplane being referenced by other TV shows and movies and if you’ve come across these references before actually watching the movie can take away a little from the movie watching experience. Though depending on the reference it can be fun to play connect the dots. Compared to the sequel I thought that Airplane! dealt with the disaster genre was better then the way Airplane 2 dealt with the science fiction genre, there definitely should have been a couple more Aliens featured in the sequel (Come on, they where spoofing the science fiction genre!!). It was good to see that the first film’s cast agreed to return for the sequel while Abrahams and the Zuckers decided to make the television series Police Squad! instead, starring Leslie Nielsen. I liked that jokes from Airplane! where repeated in the sequel but I would have liked to that it had more of its own identity.
