89-year-old British World War II Royal Navy veteran, Bernard Jordan, who “broke out” of his nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in Normandy, France in June 2014. Along the way, he is aided by strangers, makes some new friends and says a heartfelt goodbye to a fallen friend, while news of his “escape” makes him an international sensation.
For those of you who might be interested during the London premiere of this film in September 2023, Sir Michael Caine announced his retirement from acting stating that; “I am bloody 90 now, and I can’t walk properly and all that. I sort of am retired now.”. On a side note another film, The Last Rifleman starring Pierce Brosnan and released on 5 November 2023 a couple months after The Great Escaper and is loosely based on Jordan’s story. This is one of those stories that if did know that it was a true story, you probably wouldn’t believe it. This was just a simple heartfelt and I suppose there’s an awful lot of us who hope that we’re half as active as Bernie at his age. I haven’t watched too many movies directed by Oliver Parker but I’m starting to that he’s capable with multiple genres. Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson where great as husband and wife. I also enjoyed the performances of Victor Oshin and Danielle Vitalis. Vitalis had some really good scenes opposite Jackson. Hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to see more work from Victor Oshin and Danielle Vitalis in the future. I felt that one of the most touching scenes was the conversation Bernie and Arthur (portrayed by Michael Caine and John Standing) had with the German veterans on D-Day. Especially considering the line about Black Forest gateau chocolate earlier in the movie.
