Self-appointed Mother of the Year, Ronnie has given her daughter Audrey everything, so when Audrey selfishly falls into a coma, Ronnie has no choice but to keep their dreams alive by assuming her identity.
It’s been awhile since I’ve last seen a decent comedy. Truthfully it has been a long while since I’ve last watched a comedy that has made me laugh as hard as Audrey. It is so reassuring that there are filmmakers out there going against the comedic meta of ‘it’s awkward so it has to be funny’. I’ve come across so many comedies coming out of the USA that have openly embraced this meta I was starting to think that the genre was dead. Yes, I admit that Audrey’s comedy was awkward at times and perhaps if you take a moment to look at how the plot was structured it was a little cliched. But Audrey is so much more then that. At times it was cheesy and it was darkly disturbing. To the point of should I feel so bad for laughing to the point of tears, it was good to that Audrey wasn’t concerned only going after it’s laughs and had an emotional payoff in the third act.
I was a little surprised to see that Jeremy Lindsay Taylor pop in this, it had been a couple of years since I last saw him in a movie. I really enjoyed the performances of Josephine Blazier, Jackie van Beek & Hannah Diviney. I wasn’t entirely expecting the direction things went with Aaron Fa’aoso’s character Bourke. But I was pleasantly surprised.
AACTA do not ignore this movie.
