Space Marines are sent to investigate strange events at a research facility on Mars but find themselves at the mercy of genetically enhanced killing machines.
A revisit was in order, because this popped up on Prime Video. Rewatching this might not have been the best of ideas. For the record I do have memories of watching this at the cinema when it was originally released, I didn’t like it then and twenty years later my opinion really hasn’t changed that much about it. In retrospect judging his early roles Dwayne Johnson (or if you prefer The Rock) probably gave a better performance in The Mummy Returns, so it’s good to see that over the years that his ability as an actor has improved over the years, considering at the time Doom was the seventh movie He had been cast in. Doom is one of many examples as to why there are no decent movies adapted from video games. There was some pacing issues with the movie and the dialogue, mostly Sarge’s (portrayed by Johnson) at times came across as being hokey. The high[point creatively for the movie probably was the first person shooter sequence leading up to the climax.
I always thought that Dexter Fletcher was an odd casting choice for Doom, Karl Urban gave a decent enough performance for what Doom was though I thought that he was better suited to something more like the 2012 Judge Dread remake (a movie my opinion of Dread has shifted slightly over the years). While I got serious ‘why the heck were you cast in this?’ vibes from Rosamund Pike.
