Pat Welsh the Voice of ET

In the Star Wars universe, ET is an alien species (featured in the 1982 movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, directed by Steven Spielberg) known as the Asogians. The Asogians were paddle-footed, large-eyed sentients indigenous to Brodo Asogi. The species was first seen in the Star Wars Universe in Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace.

Ben Burtt overheard Pat Welsh talking in a camera store and asked her to audition for the voice of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Welsh’s chain-smoking (reportedly two packs a day) led to her raspy voice, which was used simultaneously with Debra Winger in the film. Welsh was originally paid $380 for 9 1/2 hours of work on E.T.

If you draw a long enough bow then technically ET was also in Return of the Jedi because Pat Welsh provided the voice for Boushh the bounty hunter Princess Leia impersonated during the rescue of Han Solo from Jabba’s Palace.
