Captain Jack Sparrow searches for the trident of Poseidon while being pursued by an undead sea captain and his crew.
Another one of the Pirates movies has been unleashed on the public after a chapter in the franchise when I was almost certain that they had killed off the franchise with the previous movie. I mean cinematic homicide can be the only explanation of the quality of the previous movie On Stranger Tides. But I suppose we can take some comfort in knowing that the end of the franchise is just around the corner with a possible 6th movie being scheduled for 2019 or 2020.
Dead Men Tell no Tales is pretty much what you would expect from the Pirates franchise. To be honest my memories of On Stranger Tides had left the bar kind of low. The action sequence introduces Jack Sparrow to Dead Men Tell no Tales was pretty much that you would expect (because they are the driving force of the movies in the franchise). Both Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario gave decent enough performances and it was good to see some returning characters from the other. However, one of the downfalls of the movie was that a lot of the supporting characters seemed to be one dimensional, it could also be argued that Thwaites and Scodelario’s characters could have had more to their arcs.
I was also a little disappointed when I found out that this was directed by Joachim Rønning, Espen Sandberg. In the past two man directing teams have worked but if I was pressed I could probably only think of decent movies being delivered on two separate occasions.
