In search of a new energy source, Russia accidentally reawakens the Kolossus – a giant robot doomsday device from the Cold War. At the same time, a new Mega Shark appears, threatening global security.
Okay, its always a little odd joining a film franchise at its fourth instalment but I suppose I can draw some comfort that with the festival of mysterious insanity the next movie I have to review is the first movie in the Mega Shark franchise.
On the DVD cover it says its Pacific Rim meets Godzilla. That is the first studio approved description of an Asylum ‘movie’ that I would actually kind of agree with. However, I would point out that the Kolossus robot seemed to have a passing resemblance to the Titans from Attack on Titan and if we are going to go down the Godzilla comparison route it’s the 2014 Godzilla directed by Gareth Edwards because (spoilers) even though this a versus movie a fight between Kolossus and Mega Shark doesn’t happen until the final third of the ‘movie’.
Cheesy effects actually could have been saving grave for this movie, hell I probably would have even been won over with an approach to the effects that would have looked more at home in an episode of the power rangers. Not exactly some of the scenes had transitions that would work in a power rangers’ episode. But the approach to the effects of Mega Shark vs. Kolossus where you get what you paid for.
However, there actually was a kind of poignant moment (I know its hard to believe) Patrick Bauchau who portrayed Dr. Sergie Abramov who was the inventor of the Kolossus robot made a speech about doomsday weapons and the point that ‘countries don’t disarmament but same armament’. I really wasn’t expecting Robert Oppenheimer’s ‘I am become death’ quote to be referenced in this ‘movie’.
