An untested American submarine captain teams with U.S. Navy Seals to rescue the Russian president, who has been kidnapped by a rogue general.
One of Michael Nyqvist last films before his death in 2017. It turns out that Hunter Killer was based on the 2012 novel Firing Point by Don Keith and George Wallace.
For those of you wondering this was the first movie that I watched after the recent Mysterious Insanity reviews. Is Hunter Killer a piece of genius? Perhaps not, though it is definitely very different from the last movie I have seen that is set on a submarine I’d like to say that it was Crimson Tide but, it probably was Down Periscope starring Kelsey Grammer. It’s okay (even with a somewhat cliched ending) but I can some people might think that it might not live up to its trailer. Though I would like to make it clear that even though the ending might be cliched it’s still cool. For some reason the way Michael Gor portrayed his character Admiral Dmitri Durov while watching Hunter Killer I kept on thinking that Gor was Andy Serkis. Common gave an okay performance though I have to admit the last time I saw movie that he was cast in was probably John Wick: Chapter 2.
I am really not that familiar with Donovan Marsh’s work though some of the underwater shots of the submarines on the larger screen of the friendly neighbourhood cinema did have an ‘oh that’s cool’ quality to them.
