The story of crime boss John Gotti and his son.
As far as I know Gotti did not receive a cinematic release in Australia, it should be noted that the release of Gotti was met with a certain amount of controversy in regards to a large disparity on Rotten Tomatoes, between the audience approval score of 80% and the 0% critics’ score during the film’s opening weekend. I’ll admit that I don’t think that I heard anything positive about this movie and it was a sense of morbid curiosity that caused me to sit down and watch this.
I suppose my biggest problem with Gotti was John Travolta’s performance as John Gotti. Travolta is clearly a capable actor capable of commanding your attention from the screen. But the accent he used as Gotti just seemed to rub the wrong way and at times it struck me as a cliched approximation of what a mobster should sound like in a movie. I liked Spencer Lofranco’s performance as John Gotti Jr. and I was surprised to see Stacy Keach in this movie.
The overall plot was interesting though it did seem to be more about Gotti the man rather than Gotti the mobster. It would have also been nicer to see the movie flow in a more concise fashion.
