The uncouth Sir Les Patterson teams up with Dame Edna Everage to save the world from a virulent bioterror attack ordered by Colonel Richard Godowni of the Gulf State of Abu Niveah.
Okay, I openly admit that there are certain gaps in my cinematic education, am I saying that Les Patterson Saves the World is required watching for a well-rounded cinematic education? Possibly, especially if there is any truth to what I read about the opening gala on Les Patterson Saves the World’s Wikipedia page.
Les Patterson Saves the World was a random online find and I immediately knew that I had to watch it, though I have to admit my first thought of the plot was who the hell would send Les Patterson to the United Nations.
Despite the negative reception when it was originally released this is a very watchable movie though perhaps a little predictable in places (such as the blunder that sent Patterson to the Middle East). It should also be noted that the some of the jokes are crass and politically incorrect, yet very funny. I found myself howling with laughter on several occasions, I also loved the use of the boxing kangaroo flag.
The biggest surprise in casting was probably Joan Rivers as the President of the United States as well as Henri Szeps who played Dr. Charles Herpes and his sister Desiree Herpes (I’m mostly familiar with Szeps from his portrayal of Robert Beare on the iconic Australian series Mother and Son). I enjoyed Pamela Stephenson’s performance as Veronique Crudité. It is a little self-indulgent, but I would have loved to have seen Paul Jennings given more screen time as Prime Minister Bob, because I love the impression.
