A big thank you to Airlie Dodds for taking the time to answer some questions about her upcoming movie The Furies. The Furies hits Australian Cinemas November 7th
What are some of the other projects that you have worked on?
I’ve worked across Film, TV and Theatre and recently just did Heath Davis’s sophmore feature Book Week. I played an angsty and unkempt prac. teacher named Sarah.
Your Bio said you worked on Neighbours who was your character? What was your character’s story on the show?
I played a character called Rain Taylor who comes to Erinsborough to reconnect with an old boyfriend and set up a commune.
What attracted you to The Furies?
I like the marathon nature of the part, and I liked Tony. I liked seeing a young girl confront her passivity, and sense of ‘lesser than’ and become not only active, but carnal and brave.
Had you worked with anybody involved with The Furies before?
I actually had just finished a play with Ebony Vagulans, who plays my best friend. It was fairly fortuitous to have her in the film, because we really liked working alongside one another, and she’s a smart and playful actor who I’m lucky to have as a real-life friend too.
What should audiences expect when they go to watch The Furies?
A traditional slasher with almost a fairy tale component. Weird to coalesce those two things, but it’s about a girl whose worst nightmare is to fend for herself, and then her being thrust into that exact scene. I think Tony is hinting at the hostilities between women and men, and women and women, and men and men in a really accessible and base way – and how these things have an almost purchasable nature.
Without giving to much away, do you have a favourite scene in The Furies? Where any of these scenes challenging for you?
There was this one moment I had to get like truly enraged, and I did and then Linda Ngo who plays Rose line was ‘Kayla!’ and she yelled ‘Kaylie’ just as ferociously and we all just laughed. The shoot wasn’t unpleasant in anyway but it was stressful sometimes because we were so pressed for time so when she made that mistake I just lost it laughing. It’s nice to just have a look around sometimes at work and drink it in because making a film is such a unique and finite experience and you can be pre-occupied with the process of doing it and forget to relish where you are and how good it is.
What was the last horror movie that you watched?
Hmm – probably one of the Scream films. Do they count ? I think they are satire. I love them.
Do you have any future projects that we should know about?
I’m doing the Gloaming for Stan and that comes out in January.
