Three unknowing martial artists are summoned to a mysterious island to compete in a tournament whose outcome will decide the fate of the world.

For those of you who might be hanging out for the release of Simon McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat I suggest that when you get the chance watch or rewatch the 1995 version. For those of you who might be interested I first reviewed this back in 2012.

Now if you go into this expecting bloody and epic fight sequences, you’ll end up finding yourself disappointed. The Martial arts sequences come off looking as cheesy, come to think of it when this was originally released the action sequences where cheesy following in the glorious tradition popularized by TV series such as Hercules The Legendary Journeys and Xena Warrior Princess.
Linden Ashby had a couple of amusing moments as Johnny Cage most notable was his fight with Goro. But the only decent performances came from Christopher Lambert, Trevor Goddard and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. I just loved the way Tagawa carried himself as Shang Tsung. It should be noted that only Robin Shou and Talisa Soto returned two years later for the second movie which picked up immediately after the events of the previous film. For the record this was not the best of decisions by Shou and Soto.
I suppose the only good thing that came out of this movie was its theme song.
