Irwin M. “Fletch” Fletcher is a newspaper reporter being offered a large sum to off a cancerous millionaire, but is on the run, risking his job and finding clues when it’s clear the man is healthy.

On a whim I brought a couple of movies featuring Geena Davis, the other one I hope to get reviewed as soon as possible was Cutthroat Island, I’ve also been meaning to take a look the 1985 Fletch after taking a look at the recent reboot featuring John Hamm, Before sitting down to watch this version of Fletch I don’t recall if i have seen it before though I have vague recollections of watching parts of its 1989 sequel Fletch Lives.
I will admit that I really haven’t watched that many movies featuring Chevy Chase so immediately with his performance it was interesting to see him as a forty-something (my age) giving the kind of ‘wise-ass’ performance that I would expect from him in his 60’s. Waiting to take a look at Geena Davis’ work I suppose Fletch might have been something of an odd choice especially considering that she only has a handful of scenes in the movie all of them with Chase. Though Davis is great in her scenes with Chase. I guess the reason I chose Fletch is because the previous earliest released movie I have watched featuring Davis was probably Thelma & Louise and it is interesting to see the direction her movie roles went over the space of about 6 years. I thought that ‘The Car Chase’ and ‘Hug a Cop’ sequences were both hilarious and for the record I’ve always been a sucker for The Private Eye Monologue trope. Now perhaps I should have done a little homework and have rewatched Confess Fletch’s finale seemed at least partly inspired by the original movie.
