At the conclusion of fulfilling working lives, two very different men, Graeme and Michael, convinced of their loss of identity and disconnection to the world around them, decide that suicide is their only option. Only one man survives the attempt on his life.
I think that this might be the first short form documentary from the MDFF that I have reviewed for The Movie Boards. This man’s Worth talks about suicide amoung men I really give this small heads up because the decision to watch this was made without really knowing what it was all about, and there is nothing worse then when a movie makes a bad day worse, but I suppose if it leads to conversations it can be forgiven, because conversations are certaainly the purpose of a documentary about mental health. I found that the opening five minutes with Sallie talking to the camera about her father was very powerful in an eerie sort of way with how the shot was framed. There was some beautiful shots paticularly the ones of Sallie’s farm and i thought that the use of the slides was an interesting touch. I was a little shocked by the point that was made by UNSW Professor Brian Draper made about suicide being globally a male phenomenon with the exception of part of rural china. There was some interesting talent featured in the documentary I thought what Jo Williams had to say was particularly interesting.
