Number 5, one of a group of experimental military robots, undergoes a sudden transformation after being struck by lightning. He develops self-awareness, consciousness, and a fear of the reprogramming that awaits him back at the factory. With the help of a young woman, Number 5 tries to evade capture and convince his creator that he has truly become alive.
I vaguely remember watching Short Circuit when I was smaller and prettier. I have not revisited it until just now after chancing upon Short Circuit while on a shopping expedition. I was surprised to see that the robots in the movie held up and did not look lame which most “robot movies” run the risk of especially if they fall into the trap of making their robots look like there is a human inside it. This just goes to the genius of the Special Effects designer and Special Effects Engineer Syd Mead and Eric Allard.
Thinking about it Steve Guttenberg really did seem to across as if he was portraying an intelligent Carey Mahoney because Newton Crosby seemed to be imbued with similar wise ass sense of humor.
