Chuck Norris only agreed to still do this film on the proviso that it be more family friendly movie with a moral theme, along the lines of The Karate Kid (1984), a film that he had been impressed with. Now, though it has been awhile since I last saw The Karate Kid if we are going to be making comparisons between the two movies as far as being “Family Friendly” movies I feel that Side Kicks is the sort of movie you’d watch if you had younger kids. I loved the opening action sequence it’s a great example of bad 90s kung fu, I did find the frequency of the dream sequences to be a little annoying, probably because I’m over the age of 30. However, it was good to see variety I the dream sequences. I loved the scene where Barry (portrayed by Jonathan Brandis) first meets Chuck Norris at the competition I loved Mako’s introduction and thought that his performance as Mr. Lee came across as a slightly more chaotic Mr. Miyagi. I know it’s immature to admit this but the nunchaku joke from The Simpsons did come to mind a couple of times while watching this.
