When stolen secret tapes land on his desk, a washed up British spy, Archie Cookson, becomes the target for a psychopathic hit-man sent to retrieve them.
For years, we have been bombarded with spy thrillers that follow in the well-worn path of the likes of Agent 007 James Bond and other gadget wielding womanising supper spies. Eliminate: Archie Cookson abandons this path and treads the path of the everyday agent who works a 9 to 5 working day and might have similar problems to the everyday person, such as dealing with being separated from his wife.
Paul Rhys was brilliant in the title role and seemed to have an interesting onscreen look that seemed to be somewhere between Hugh Grant and Robert Llewellyn. Though I was particularly impressed by the performance of Freddy Downham who was in his first every feature film in a role that could only be described as an upper-class English gentleman in his twilight years trapped in the body of an 11-year-old boy.
