R18+ computer games passed

Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice Jason Clare recently announced that the Australian Senate passed the legislation requiring an R18+ classification category for computer games.
When the legislation passed, Justice Clare commented that the classification reforms are over 10 years in the making.
“The R 18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play, and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material” Justice Clare said.
Justice Clare noted that the national scheme will commence on January 1st 2013 and that the States and Territories will pass their own complementary legislation to ensure that R18+ computer games are appropriately regulated.
