A look at love through the eyes of five interconnected couples experiencing the thrills and surprises of having a baby, and ultimately coming to understand the universal truth that no matter what you plan for, life doesn’t always deliver what’s expected.
It really was a ballsy choice by filmmakers to adapted a movie from a pregnancy how-to-guide. I am not sure about everybody else but when adapting a book to a movie it is kind of a good sign when the source material actually has something resembling a plot. Though of course the best way to overcome this was to throw enough star power at the movie and see what happens.
The only movie that movie that has a more tenuous link to its source material then What to Expect when your Expecting was the Hasbro toy movie Battleship. I also got a chuckle when I spotted one of the characters reading the book within the first fifteen minutes of the movie.
Though director Kirk Jones did a good job with the movie, I really have to question why he was given the movie. Surely, there were other directors with more experience directing ensemble movies like this? This was a movie with its heart it the right place but Jones just did not seem knock it out of the park. It was great to see Australian actor Rebel Wilson got a small role in this movie though directors need to remember to keep a tight rein on her so that she will not try slip material in that would be more at home on the Australian sketch comedy show The Wedge.
