Dog and cat owners should remember to make suitable plans for their pets during the Christmas and New Year period.
“By taking a few simple precautions you reduce the risk of your beloved pet getting lost, hit by a car, impounded at the Mugga Lane facility, involved in a dog attack, or harassing neighbours.” Peter Dinan, Manager of Operations and Registrar of Domestic Animal Services.
Mr Dinan stated that Domestic Animal Services provides a discounted micro-chipping service for $31.05 and that your pet should be desexed. Not only is it compulsory in the ACT for cats and dogs born after 21 June 2001 to be desexed (unless owners have a permit to keep a dog or cat sexually entire).
“If regular exercise is kept up and your dog has toys to keep it occupied it is also less likely that it will try to escape. Regular check-ups from your pet’s carer will also ensure that your dog or cat is never without water and has enough food. When your pet is left at home it also needs to have sufficient shade and shelter, especially with the temperatures rising.” Mr Dinan added.
