Veronica suddenly finds herself in a surreal and horrifying marathon race. The rules are simple: If you are lapped, you die. If you step off the path, you die. Many will start but only one may cross the finish line alive.
One of the main things that attracted to hire this one when I saw it at my friendly neighbourhood DVD store was because on the front of the case there was an excerpt from a review that said this was a worthy successor to the 2000 movie Battle Royale directed by Kinji Fukasaku. Personally I feel that whoever wrote that review was drawing a rather long bow, for the simple reason that the film makers for Battle Royale quickly established the catalyst for the plot and did not need to use the first third of the movie introducing the main characters.
That being said The Human Race is still a very watchable movie with some very squeamish scenes thrown in for good measure. I was not familiar with any of the actors or the director though I was kind of impressed with the movie. However, I really would have liked if the identity of the entity behind ‘the race’ and the ultimate reason behind ‘the race’ was teased out a little better.
