Segways granted limited use in central basin area of Lake Burley Griffin

Recently ACT Attorney General Simon Corbell granted an exception for the use of Segways in the central basin of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. The exceptions lasts for nine months from September 17th until June 30th 20012.
“Until the review is completed, I am unable to say whether Segways are here to stay in Canberra. However, I am aware that Segways have attracted a lot of interest in the Canberra community recently and I am pleased that, although only in a limited area around the lake, both locals and visitors will be able to enjoy this new mode of ‘transport’ whilst the review is completed,” Mr Corbell concluded.
It should be noted that throughout Australia that the use of Segways is treated differently depending on each state’s adaption of the Australian Road Rules.
For example it in New South Wales it is illegal for Segways to be used on public roads as the rider is to exposed to traffic and the segways themselves are too heavy and dangerous for footpaths and cycle paths.
