Minister for Education, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP and Minister for Health and Minister for Sport, the Hon Peter Dutton MP recently announced $1.4 million in funding for the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Australia. The announcement coincides with His Royal Highness Prince Edward’s visit to Australia to commemorate more than 50 years of the Duke of Edinburgh Award in Australia.
“The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a well-established and celebrated way to recognise our young people’s achievements,” Mr Pyne said “It is valued by educational institutions and employers and equips young people with practical and social skills to help them succeed in their chosen career path,”
The Duke of Edinburgh Award was founded in 1956 by Prince Phillip and has since spread across the globe. It enables young people aged 14 to 24 to learn practical skills valuable to their personal and professional development.
“The benefits are far-reaching and extend to schools, communities and governments investing in youth development programmes,” Mr Dutton said.
Mr Dutton explained that The Award consists of several categories in which young people are encouraged to volunteer their time in their communities, participate in sport and recreational activities, and develop their personal interests and social skills.
