The Federal Minister for Tourism Martin Ferguson recently announced that a new low-cost carrier, Scoot Airlines that will be entering the Australian market with services between Singapore and Sydney commencing in mid-2012.
Scoot Airlines was founded in November and is a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, this is Singapore Airlines’ third subsidiary airline the others being SilkAir and Singapore Airlines Cargo.
Minister Ferguson commented that Tourism Australia has spent $23 million in 2010-11 partnering 14 different airlines on 50 campaigns in 23 markets in cooperative marketing campaigns. Of this, $2 million was used specifically to support new route start-ups. For 2011-12, the aviation development fund has been increased by 40 per cent to $2.8 million.
