ACT Minister Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury has announced that the Autumn weed swap is on again! On Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 April, Canberrans can swap invasive weeds from their garden for free Australian native plants.
“Whether you have an established garden, a yard that is a bit out of control or live close to a nature reserve, have a look around your yard and see what invasive species you might be able to swap for some beautiful native plants,” said Mr. Rattenbury.“All members of the community are invited to attend, even if you don’t have any weeds to swap, come along and learn about the benefits of having beautiful native plants, the dangers of invasive weeds and how to combat them”.
Mr. Rattenburry explained that “A range of attractive, native plants will be available for swapping, including taller shrubs such as acacias, medium shrubs such as correa dusky bell and wee jasper grevillea, groundcovers including creeping boobialla and tussocky type plants such as lomandra and river tussock. All the plants are supplied by local growers and are very hardy in the Canberra region. Rattenburry added that the swap will be held from 8.30 am to 4.45 pm at the green waste recycling centres at Canberra Sand and Gravel in West Belconnen and Corkhill Bros near the Mugga Lane landfill. This event, which has been well supported by the community for over 12 years, is a partnership between the Australian Native Plants Society, and the ACT Government.
“The next weed swap won’t be until Spring 2015, so don’t miss out on this weekend’s opportunity!” Mr Rattenbury concluded.
