In the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.
Before we get too far into things The Man from U.N.C.L.E was based on a television series of the same name from 1964 and ran until 1968, and for the record no I haven’t watched any episodes from the television series. It should be noted that by the time The Man from U.N.C.L.E made its way to television screens the third James Bond movie Goldfinger had been released. Any comparisons between James Bond and The Man from U.N.C.L.E is pretty easy to make considering that Ian Fleming was reportedly one of the consultants when this series was being planned.
Director Guy Ritchie actually did a decent job with this one even though an Action comedy might not be directly in Ritchie’s wheelhouse. He was more than capable of delivering a very watchable movie, with the sense of cool that you would expect from one of Ritchie’s movies. It was good to see that Ritchie seemed to pay homage to The Man from U.N.C.L.E’s TV origins particularly with the use of 60’s fonts for the establishing shot titles, the use of stock footage in the beginning of the movie and the simple fact that the TV series probably has what could be considered as a “Grandpa” status for the spy-action genre (in my opinion ‘Grandpa’ status should also given to Get Smart and the early James Bond Movies) the entire structure of the plot of the movie could be traced back to the series. If you had the time, the patience and the need for an essay topic for a TV and Film history class. Both Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer where brilliant casting choices they both have the chiseled jaw that you would expect of a 1960’s leading man. I also thought that Elizabeth Debicki was brilliant as the villain of the piece.
With the way the way the end of the movie was left it really would not surprise me if there was a potential sequel.
