Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews joined Minister for Sport, Tourism and Major Events John Eren at the Albert Park setting today to announce the extension that keeps the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne until 2023.
“We are very happy to extend our relationship with Melbourne, who continue to set the standard for Formula 1^® events globally. This new agreement will take the city past 25 consecutive years of hosting Formula 1^®, a super achievement.” Group CEO of Formula One Group Bernie Ecclestone commented.
Mr. Andrews pointed out that Formula 1® races across a season are viewed by hundreds of millions of fans all around the world, and Melbourne has the first of the calendar. The Labor Government has secured the world-renowned event at the perfect time, as Australian favourite Daniel Ricciardo’s promising career hits top gear.
“There’s nothing quite like the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne and the buzz it creates around our state. It attracts visitors to Victoria from all over the globe, and shows the world we have the best of everything. Our competitors interstate have made no secret of their desire to steal it, but it is here to stay. I can assure Victorians Daniel Ricciardo won’t be racing over the Sydney Harbour Bridge any time soon.” Mr. Andrews commented.
Mr. Eren explained that the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix is one of world sport’s most popular events. Thousands of fans flock from all over the world, and images of Melbourne and Victoria are broadcast into millions of homes around the globe – inspiring many viewers to travel here and see our state for themselves.
