Summer by the Sea’s 20th Anniversary

Summer by the Sea is celebrating 20 years of showcasing the very best of Victoria’s unique coastal habitats. Kicking off in January, the 2016 program highlights the care Victorians have for the state’s coastal environments and the wonderful creatures that inhabit our shores and waterways.
Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Lisa Neville recently confirmed that more than 250 free events and activities will run from 2 – 26 January 2016 as Summer by the Sea mixes fun and education at coastal locations across the state.
Minister Neville explained that Victoria’s coastal environments are fragile and strongly affected by introduced plants, animals and human behaviours. They can be protected for generations to come by responsible use and management, and the ongoing dedication of coastal volunteers whose efforts are celebrated at Summer by the Sea.
Minister Neville went on to comment that next month’s diverse program will mark the 20th consecutive year that Victorians will turn out in large numbers to appreciate and interact with Victoria’s unique habitats and species from Port Fairy in the state’s west to Lakes Entrance in the east. Neville added that in 2016, the program showcases Victoria’s walking, swimming, sightseeing and fishing places. Popular activities are expected to be rockpool ‘rambles’, sea shell safaris, snorkelling, interactive coastal field trips, beach and foreshore excursions, talks on local marine species, the screening of documentaries and special breakfasts for dog owners and their dogs.
Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford explained that Victoria’s coastal environments are fragile and strongly affected by introduced plants, animals and human behaviours. They can be protected for generations to come by responsible use and management, and the ongoing dedication of coastal volunteers whose efforts are celebrated at Summer by the Sea.
“This year’s program will not disappoint those who love getting on the water and learning about our unique marine life and how it can be sustainably managed.” Minister Pulford commented “Summer by the Sea 2016 is a fantastic opportunity for people to have fun whilst appreciating the benefits of healthy, sustainable interactions with Victoria’s waterways and fisheries.”
